DRO advocates for hospital to allow service animal to accompany person in ER

A person who is blind contacted DRO. She had already been to the emergency room once, and was told she could not have her seeing eye dog there with her. She was scared she would have to return to the ER and would not be able to keep her dog which is her lifeline.

Service animals are allowed anywhere in the hospital where people are allowed to be present, including ER. A DRO staff attorney reviewed the hospital’s policies and negotiated for the hospital to agree that if she returned, she could keep her dog for the first 24 hours, and after that, the hospital staff would help arrange for board and care by a person designated by the client.
