Mental health listening tour around Oregon this fall

Beginning this month, Sen. Sara Gelser, D-Corvallis, and Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Director Lynne Saxton are traveling the state to hear from adolescents, adults and families who have had difficulties accessing mental health and substance use disorder treatment in Oregon. All meetings will be held from 5-8pm and dinner will be provided.

More from OHA:

We want to hear from you!

Have you tried to find behavioral health services (mental health care and addiction services) for yourself, your child or another loved one? Were you able to find help in your community when you needed it?

We need to hear YOUR stories about what worked and what didn’t.

Your story can help make services better in the future!

Senator Sara Gelser and OHA Director Lynne Saxton invite you to share your story at a Town Hall Meeting in Astoria. They will briefly introduce themselves, but we want to hear from the real expert – YOU! This is part of a statewide listening tour to help us find ways to make Oregon a place where people living with mental health needs can thrive!

This meeting is for those who are using, have used or have tried to use behavioral health services for themselves or their families, no matter what type of insurance coverage they have. We do encourage advocates, providers, educators, first responders and other community members to attend as listeners.

From Senator Sara Gelser’s Facebook page:

Do you or someone you know have a great story to tell about effective mental health services you received? Did you have an experience that left you without the support you needed in a time of crisis? Have you or a loved one needed help but not been sure where to turn? Have you felt powerless as you watched unsupported mental health needs mushroom into a crisis that resulted in jail, hospitalization, unemployment, homelessness or suicide?

We need to hear all of these stories. It doesn’t matter if you are on the Oregon Health Plan, have private insurance, or pay with cash. We need to understand how our system works for everyone. Please come out and share your stories. You are the experts and we need to hear from you so we can be sure Oregon is a place where people can get the help they need when and where they need it!

Oregon Health Authority Director Lynn Saxton, other leaders, and I will be attending these listening session to hear from YOU. Please mark you calendars, spread the word, and come share your stories!
